    Great work on this plug-in. Just installed it on my site which I completely revamped and I expect to get rolling again soon (WP 2.1). Hi spellmank,

    I slightly modified the plugin so that you can disable picture alignment. You won’t get the “float: left;” style anymore if you set FUP_USE_ALIGNMENT to false.

    Please download version 1.1 and try it.

    (Note however that the width in pixel is needed for a div if you include a caption, so that the caption does not overflow on both sides of the image).

    Salut Martin,

    Merci beaucoup de m’avertir du probleme que tu as rencontre.

    Thanks a lot for reporting the problem. I must frankly admit that I did not test the plugin on a Mac (simply because I don’t have one). I only checked it on IE and Firefox on Linux and Windows.

    About the button that does not appear: I noticed the height of the upload iframe is sometimes too short, which causes the submit button to be hidden, but it these cases, I always had a vertical scroll bar, which would allow me to access the button. You didn’t have a scrollbar on the iframe?

    About the deactivation not working, I never observed such a phenomenon. In fact, when you deactivate a plugin, the .php file is not read by WordPress anymore (it is pretty much like if the file would be removed), so I really don’t understand how the plugin could work after being deactivated. A browser caching problem? What happens when you completely reload the page?

    If you give me more info, I might try to look into this, but since I cannot reproduce the problem I won’t be of great help.

    In addition, when I click the “Browse All” tab, the entire iframe disappears.

    And scrollbars are nowhere to be seen in either instance.

    No problems on a blog running 2.1.

    Hi John,

    Thanks a lot for reporting the problem.

    I found out the cause of this behavior (the plugin was developed on 2.0.4 and later ported for 2.0.6 but it happens not to be backward compatible). I am planning to release an updated version of the plugin which supports older WP 2.0.x versions as well.

    Stay tuned.

    Hi gbot,

    Thanks.
    Yes, for watermarking to work, you need the “composite” utility (part of ImageMagick package) installed on your server.

    For more info see:
    http://www.imagemagick.org/script/composite.php

    The plugin assumes this utility is located in the /usr/bin directory on the server. If it is located elsewhere, you can update the FUP_COMPOSITE_PATH option in flexible-upload.php.

    Regarding watermarking, the plugin requires a binary part of the ImageMagick package. See my other comment.

    I am by no means a coder but I did look through the .js file and it seems to me that none of the options in there actually show up. Icon? Align? Caption? The only things in my inline editor are the same exact things that show up in Manage >> Options, none of those options show up in either.

    Ideas? For now my user can get buy with copying and pasting the image URL then using the “Image” button but that will probably get old after a while LOL

    First of all, could you check the directory where the plugin is installed. It should be in wp-content/plugins/flexible-upload/ (you should not copy the files directly under wp-content/plugins/

    If this point is ok, it would be nice if you could check (1) the apache error_log on your web server (if you have access to it) and (2) the Javascript console (it is accessible directly in Firefox).

When placing pictures on the right, the cushion is still odd, but the text doesn’t overlap the pic, so for now, all pics are right justified. Thanks again for a great plug-in. To fix your design, here’s what I propose you: edit the style.css file in the wp-content/themes/mistylook-101/ directory and add the following line:

    .imageframe { padding:0px 20px 0px 10px; }

    This should give you a bit more space on the right of your pictures.

It’s just too bad there is now nothing to link back to for proper use. The only way I can use this plugin is to upload an image, attach all the properties to it, deacitvate the plugin, go back to the uploader and upload it w/out the plugin. The attributes stay with the image… hm. Such a wonderful tool but kind of a pain with that little bug. Still beats resizing a ton elsewhere.

    Thank you very much for a very useful plugin – and simple to use.

    I made a slight adjustment to the javascript code which I hope you’d like to incorporate. I replaced in line 302 the code

    ‘class=”imageframe” ‘

    with

    ‘class=”imageframe’ + align + ‘” ‘

    which makes it much more flexible for using with a style sheet because for a right-floated image the class is now imageframeright and for a left-floated image the class is imageframeleft, while a centred image has the class imageframecenter.

    Hi

    Bit of a feature request…

    I really like your plugin and its functionality, I’ve seen many that do similar things but not quite as well as this.

    I run two multiuser blogs Team Pyranha & P&H Paddlers as such many of my users are novice computer users and not very net savvy so i try and keep posting to the blogs as simple as possible for them.

    One of the problems i often have is that they upload HUGE photos that break the theme and require horizontal scroll bars, I then have to go back and resize the photos manually.

    Would it be possible for me (as admin) to have access to the options page without giving them the extra controls at upload that will just confuse them? So only admins have the power to set the resize values?

    This would basically Idiot proof the blog so they can’t mess things up…. which would be great for me.

    Also is it possible to set the watermark to the bottom right corner?

    Thanks for the great work on the plugin, I have one small observation/problem.

    When you use the CSS image alignment, the post editor uses div tags instead of the default p tags for text.

    However, this messes up the text formatting because the tags don’t give a line break before and after paragraphs.

    As a result I am using the old-fashioned image alignment now, but that means I can’t put images in the centre.

    Any way of correcting this?

    Hi Antoine,

    I stumbled across this plugin by accident and it solves a lot of problems for me: resizing on upload and easy insertion when using a plugin like lightbox. Nice work.

    +1 for Highslide support

    Can I add my vote to GB’s suggestion to support Highslide please? I prefer highslide because if you are showing an image that is bigger than the browser window then it scales it down to fit in the window (with the option to expand to full size if you want).

    I did take a look at the source and it wasn’t obvious to me – I felt like I’d have to make a lot of changes in lots of places (but that might just be my limited understanding). If I can help you solve this then please ask.

    I have two remarks: the PNG watermark transparency didn’t work for me until I replaced imagecopymerge with imagecopy($image, $wat_img, ($imgwidth - $watwidth), 0, 0, 0, $watwidth, $watheight) in flexible-upload.php. It may be the issue of my server config though.

    Secondly, I wanted an option not to add watermark at all. So I added to flexible-upload-wp21.php and else if ($_POST['watermark_location'] == 'BR') to flexible-upload.php so that when it’s ‘NO’ it does nothing.

    Maybe this can be useful to somebody.

    This is something you can easily do by adding the following code to your theme’s stylesheet:

    - avoir une option pour que l’image “uploadée” n’ai pas automatiquement la “watermark” ajoutée.
    - “uploader” plusieurs images en même temps.
    - avoir une option pour que rel=”nofollow” soit ajouté automatiquement aux liens vers les images

    Just wanted to share a tip. I was getting out of memory errors like the ones described above. The server-wide memory limit for PHP is set to 20MBs, but this was happening when uploading a 1.5MB image file. Interestingly, I noticed that it only happened when I used the “Resize” options. If I unchecked those, the image uploaded just fine. But I needed the resizing feature.

    The solution was to add:

    php_value memory_limit 64M

    to my .htaccess file. This ability to override the PHP memory limit in .htaccess must be enabled on your server of course. But the interesting thing is that this limit must be set to a value MUCH higher than the size of the images you’ll be uploading. Keep notching up that value until it allows image resizing.

    FWIW, this was on a PHP5 server.

    You were right, I got it fixed. I was working with tiny 400×600 45 kb JPG images and I didn’t figure out it could have been a memory issue. Actually, that was not something related to the actual image size, rather the memory required to perform the resizing operation (it is pretty obvious that some images required more than the default 8 MB). Thanks a lot.

    I just wanted to let you know that the latest version of Flexible Upload (1.7) is incompatible with the latest version of Podpress (8.5). On which plugin the fix can most easily be made I’m not certain. Here are the symptoms (only when Podpress is activated):

    1) Images don’t show up in the Browse option; they are represented by text displaying the file name.

    2) When an image is chosen, the old WordPress default ‘Link to File / Page / None’ shows up rather than the Flexible Upload options (including alignment etc.).

    3) When ‘Send to Editor’ is chosen, only the filename will show up in the editor, not the image or any of its code.

    This problem only occurs when Podpress is active. This is the latest version of Podpress (released earlier today) where incompatibilities with the default upload feature in WordPress were supposed to have been resolved.

    Anyone any suggestions? I like both these plugins and right now I’m going to be forced to drop one of them. (A workaround in the meantime, by the way, is to deactivate Podpress when you want to upload images. NOT very convenient!)

    John,

    After a little investigation, I found what caused the problem you mention. If you comment out line 613 in podpress.php:

    //add_filter('get_attached_file', 'podPress_get_attached_file');

    you’ll see the images displayed correctly and FU links should show up. It seems that podpress is disabling the “get_attached_file” wp function, which causes this problem. However, I don’t know why podpress does this, and I don’t know whether re-enabling the get_attached_file function would cause a problem in podpress…

    Great plugin, I’ve been using it since the early versions.
    I’ve found (and solved) two annoyances, I’ve been experiencing when using the plugin.

    The first: my images would always show up with a blue border around them. It could be solved by adding some CSS to my page, I however did it by adding

    h += ‘border=”0″ ‘;

    to line 342 in flexible-upload-js.php

    The second has been a little more tricky. I’ve also been using Dean’s FCKeditor plugin to edit my posts, and had to switch back to the built-in tinyMCE to add pics to my posts. I’ve been contemplating creating an editorSwitch-plugin, but went the easy way: I modified your plugin to also work with FCK.
    I added

    var oEditor = win.FCKeditorAPI;

    to a new line 386, and

    } else if ( typeof oEditor != ‘undefined’ ) {
    oEditor.GetInstance(‘content’).InsertHtml(h);

    to new lines 390 & 391 in the very same flexible-upload-js.php

    I hope you can add both fixes to a new release, so it would help all using FCKeditor to also use your great plugin!
    Thanks!

    Bonjour,

    Merci pour ce plugin, vraiment très pratique. Je l’ai utilisé sous Mac avec safari et Firefox (version 2.2 de wordPress) et tout fonctionne bien. Bravo. J’aurais juste une question à poser.
    Pourquoi après avoir modifié le titre ou la description d’une image déjà chargée, l’onglet parcourir lié à l’article n’apparait plus ?
    Ou autrement dit, l’image ne semble plus être associée à l’article, alors que son chemin ne semble pas avoir changé. Ce phénomène m’empêche d’utiliser [Minislides] (un autre plugin intéressant). Pensez-vous pouvoir corriger la chose ?
    Quoi qu’il en soit merci pour tout ce que vous avez déjà fait.

    this results in the first 3 images not to be resized, with the specified thumb, but the 4th image doesn´t get resized, with specified thumb. So it seems that if i have pics with no resize and resize on the same batch, the no resize applies to all of them.

    Hello Antoine

    I had been looking hard for such a plugin and really like the one you made. Kudos, and thanks.

    I just miss a few tweaks:
    - Make it optional to display the size of an image (much like you do with the watermarking). The rational being that I want contributors to my site to always use the same image size and image placement.
    - Make the watermarking dynamic, by using either a GIF signature (what you currently offer), or overlaying a text which would link to character strings, part of this string being a dynamic field. My idea is to place “Copyright XYZ” on each image, where XYZ is the name of the contributor.

    Also, I might suggest that you’d register Flexible Upload on http://wp-plugins.net to enlarge its list happy users.

    Thanks.

    I have enhanced your plugin with an unsharp mask feature to improve the quality of the generated thumbnails. I’m doing it is two stages, just like I would if I were doing it by hand in Photoshop. First some presharpening to the original image, then a final bit of sharpening on the the scaled thumbnail image. I did not write the sharpening function, but it works great. I have just shoe-horned it into your code and made a few other modifications for my specific blog needs, so I won’t repost the modded plugin, but for anyone that’s interested, it’s really easy. Just go download the UnsharpMask function from:

    http://vikjavev.no/computing/ump.php

    Just copy the UnsharpMask function from the above page and add it to the end of your flexible-upload.php file.

    Then in the flexible-upload.php file, make the following modifications:
    NEAR LINE 700
    FIND:
    if ( function_exists( ‘imageantialias’ ))
    imageantialias( $image, TRUE );
    AFTER ADD:
    //added this for presharpening….you may want to adjust settings here or before the postsharpening
    $amount = $amount ? $amount : 80; //just like the amount in Photoshop unsharp mask filter
    $radius = $radius ? $radius : .5; //just like in Photoshop
    $threshold = $threshold ? $threshold : 21; //just like in Photoshop
    $image = unsharpMask($image, $amount, $radius, $threshold);

    NEAR LINE 730
    FIND:
    $thumbnail = imagecreatetruecolor( $image_new_width, $image_new_height);

    AFTER ADD:
    //added this for postsharpening….
    $thumbnail = unsharpMask($thumbnail, $amount, $radius, $threshold);

    That should give you fairly good results. You may want to add more sharpening to the initial “presharpening” phase and then reduce it a bit on the post-sharpening phase. I have found from experience that it’s better to do a little sharpening before you scale the image, then do a little once it’s scaled. Also, highly scaled images seem to retain more detail if you scale them in multiple steps and never scale more than 50% in a single pass. I wonder if that might be incorporated into a future generation of this plugin. Just a thought.

  340. 340 On 1月 8th, 2008, Brett Brewer said:

    Doh! Please note, I used “unsharpMask” in my code above, but the original function name is “UnsharpMask” with a capital “U”, so either change my code to match the original function name or just change the function name to “unsharpMask” in the above code.

    Hello!

    This message is for people having trouble with the Fatal Error about allowed memory size limit. I had this error too, and I couldn’t even activate Flexible Upload!

    This happened because the “memory limit” set in php.ini was only 8M. The way I found to fix it was adding a .htaccess file to the WordPress directory with just this line on it:

    php_value memory_limit 64M

    I read somewhere that 64M would be a good value, and, well, i’ts all working now.

    To check if the memory limit has changed, put a PHPInfo file on your WordPress directory (http://www.hostingmanual.net/other/php.shtml), run it and look for “memory_limit”. The “master” value should still be 8MB, the “local” value (left column) should have changed.

    Hope it helps! :-)

    I seem to have found some strange conflict between my theme and flexible-upload. I have been using flexible upload for about a year now with great success for the most part. I recently upgraded WordPress to 2.3.2, and everything works fine except that flexible-upload doesn’t seem to make the thumbnail sizes what I specify them to be. Instead I get the default 128px. I tried turning off all my plugins, then just turning the flexible-upload plugin on, and that did not help. Then I tried a completely fresh install of wordpress and flexible-upload, and it seemed to work. I started turning plugins back on, and it still worked. But then when I switched to my theme (a custom theme I wrote), it no longer resizes the thumbnails.

    I am very confused why my theme should interact with flexible-upload at all. I started poking around the code a bit, and saw a javascript function “addLoadEvent”, which I also use in my theme. I thought that might be the problem, so I commented that out, but it did not help. Any advice would be very appreciative. I have tested versions 1.5 and 1.9 of flexible-upload, and I get the same error with each. I did not have any problem when I was running wordpress 2.1 however.

    Thanks.

    For the record, if anyone is still having a problem with the hidden SUBMIT button in Safari (it’s a problem in Safari 1.x as well as 3.0) I was able to solve it by adding a 50px bottom margin to the button itself. That pushes the bottom of the iframe page up enough to make it visible.

    If you’re using WP 2.3.x, you can find the style in wp-admin/css/upload.css. Add a “margin-bottom: 60px;” style to “form#upload-file .submit input” which should be at line 87. Worked for me.

    Jeffrey – Under OPTIONS > FLEXIBLE UPLOAD configure the plugin to skip the watermarking. It performs the task on image upload, so if you’ve already uploaded some stuff, you’ll have to re-upload.

    The plugin incrusts a watermark in the pictures you upload (note: if you read the doc, you can disable this functionality if not needed).

    When you disable the plugin, the watermark is still incrusted in the pictures you have uploaded when the plugin was activated, so they will not disappear, unless you upload the original files again.

    I continue to love and use your plugin… (where can I donate?) and have recently discovered something due to my own laziness. I’ve been creating some tutorials that require screen shots, and instead of naming them with good descriptive and unique names, i’ve just been numbering them. That way I can know what order the shots go in when I assemble the how to. This has led to problems because I’ve over written some of my images. Now I have 3 how to’s that point to image 1.png but they are all expecting different images and get the last on I uploaded with the name 1.png. Obviously, I should just create unique names, but, in the name of sound coding, shouldn’t the plugin look to see if there is already an image of that name there and ask if it should replace? Is that a core feature in WP that you just hijack?

    I added this line:

    if (i.onclick == null)

    before this one:

    i.onclick = function(e) { theFileList[ 'inline' == theFileList.style ? 'imageView' : 'editView' ](id, e); }

    It would be great if you could update your plugin with the above change. I’m sure the change will help you avoid incompatibilities with other plugins too and it doesn’t seem to affect the functionality of your code. If you need more details, please let me know. I would have changed my own code to avoid the glitch but everything I tried failed.

    Donna,

    You don’t need to register to post to the forums.

    The plugin files should be in the following directory:

    [bloghome]/wp-content/plugins/flexible-upload/

    How did you upload the files? First unzip, then upload them one by one? Or upload the zip file and uncompress it on your server?

  384. 384 On 3月 8th, 2008, Donna said:

    Hi, Antoine, yes, it is in the correct file. I can’t remember how I did my other plugins, but with this one I unzipped it with an unzip program (not winzip) and then uploaded the file itself (the whole file, not individual parts) into the correct folder on my server. Isn’t that right? It still isn’t in my wp page of plugins. I have 2.2, if that makes a difference.

    I’m afraid that Flexible Upload 1.9 interferes with the Manage Posts. When Flexible Upload is activated, the Manage Posts returns no posts (there are about 100). It was necessary to deactive it in order to get access to Manage Posts.

    Moreover, when FU 1.9 is active, my users very often get a blank page when they Save or Save and continue editing in the TinyMCE Advanced. I am not entirely sure whether that happens if FU is deactivated.

    I don’t know whether it might be a localization issue, but could it be? Any other suggestions?

    If you want to see which plugins are active on one of my users’ blogs, go to Plugins Used. Some of the plugins deactivated on this particular blog are active on other blogs, but do not cause the problem, as far as I can see.

    I really do hope that we can nail it down, as FU is a wonderful plugin, especially because it is localized in Danish.

The path should be relative to WordPress root directory and refer to an existing image file. If you don’t need this, you can disable this warning by specifying an empty path for the watermark image.”

    It would be best that the Flexible Upload plugin allows the watermark iamge to be take from anywhere or is there a reason that it has to be from the WordPress root directory?

    Great news Antonie!

    For me, it’s the ability to resize the images on a per-post basis (I don’t need th ability to change each image, eg: all images on this post are 200px wide). I also use the “link image to” feature. For example, I want all my thumbnails to link to the original size file.

    The important feature of WP 2.5 to keep is the multiple file upload feature, the rest of it is not as important as the ability to resize images per post.

    Thanks!

    These are the features that I love about Flexible Upload and want compatible with WP 2.5:

    1) Ability to resize original images on the fly.

    Useful when uploading large photos (8-10 megapixels), for there’s no need to resize before hand. Sure I can always resize them to 800×600 or whatever then upload through the native media uploader, but with Flexible Upload there’s no need for that. It saves times and space.

    2) Ability to choose which side to resize against.

    Not all photos have the same orientation; some landscape, while some portrait. Setting Flexible Upload to resize against the largest side prevents all sorts of problems.

    Flexible Upload is seriously one of the best plug-ins I’ve found for WP, and I believe it’s the only automated resize plug-in that actually works, so please please make it compatible with WP 2.5.

    Thanks in advance.

    I am working on adapting Flexible Upload to WP2.5

    I like the following in WP2.5 image upload:
    – Real multiple upload support (through Flash) — I couldn’t achieve this only with Javascript
    – More flexible resizing than before (largest side or crop) — not as flexible as FU, but better than before
    – Thumbnail and medium size image

    Problem is that the images are immediately uploaded once selected, so it is not possible to specify the size before performing the upload.

    I am thinking to keep the same “philosophy” as WP2.5 (upload and resize right away with default settings), and add the following:
    – insert into post with support for plugins like Lightbox, etc
    – possibility to incrust watermark after upload, before insertion in post
    – possibility to resize the image to another size, before insertion in post

    I still have to sort out how to manage multiple resizing and watermark on/off for a given image.

    Please let me know what you think.
    Thank you.

After using your plugin on my site and getting used to it, Im having a hard time with the flash upload and it seems like going backwards as far as usability. its unfortunate that the new flow of image resizing is immediate as I find an automatic sizing routine inferior to your previous process.

    OK, so I have been using 2.5 for a little bit now and the only good thing about it’s image upload feature is the multiple file upload ability. Everything else can go back to the way it was I say. It’s especially annoying how it uses a lytebox style pop-up window to insert an image, it makes it very slow to post a bunch of single pictures (if you don’t want to use the gallery feature). Your plugins ability to resize images as you insert them is much better than 2.5′s two-choice method.

    I have a mod for WordPress MU. Not sure if it is a good addition for the plugin. WordPress MU users can’t upload their signature to the WordPress root directory. So I mod it so that they can use the path where they upload their signature image for watermark. More details at the post below.

    Hi!

    First sorry for my bad english.

    You made a very good plugin!

    My question is, if I use it, is it ok for you, if I delete the signature or do you insist on it?

    Thanks in advance for your answer.

    Wilson,

    You don’t need to make any mod to the plugin. You simply need to write the path of your image relative to WP root. For example:

    wp-content/uploads/2008/04/my-signature.png

    will use a signature image in your upload directory. No need to modify the code for this.

  466. 466 On 4月 11th, 2008, Antoine said:

    Stephan,

    This signature is just an example. You are supposed to either remove the file name by your own signature (watermark) picture or blank the field, if you don’t need this feature. Absolutely no need to keep the example signature (sorry if this example was misleading).

    I love this plugin! I would love to roll out 2.5 to my clients, but I use Flexible Upload to help them from dropping HUGE images into a site and making it break the styling! Please! Please! Please! Update it.

    However there’s an error in the resulting source code after attaching images.
    The “title” attribute appears in the tag, while it should belong in the tag.
    This prevents the titles from appearing if you use any of the Lightbox type plugins.

    The problem is around lines 359~387 in flexible-upload-wp25.php.

    Download last version and try it in 2.3.3 WordPress version. “Send to the editor” button does not work… It’s a little perturbing because I was waiting for this plugin for migrating to 2.5 and maybe it works in 2.5 :-)

    Love the plugin; it’s amazing. One ‘bug’ about 1.1… actually, I’m not sure if it’s Flexible Upload or WordPress 2.5. But there’s an option for picture alignment: none, left, or right. What about center? I thought “none” would be it, but it’s not. Thanks!

    Hey Antoine,
    Great to see the new version working. I prefer this over the WP2.5 system for sure, but it would be good to see some of the useful WP2.5 features introduced into the next version. The ability to upload multiple images with one-click and the progress bar are the main ones I would like to see. The current system of “adding file fields” in order to upload multiple files requires way to many clicks. If I want to upload 20 images, it’s a nightmare.

    Otherwise, this is much better than WP2.5′s system.

    Thanks!

    I tried FU 1.10 with WP 2.3.3 and I had no problem with the “Send to Editor” button. Do you have any other plugin installed which might conflict with FU? If you want to continue discussing this issue, please use the forum.

    Thanks for updating this! On problem….when I configurd the options I got an error message that said: “Error encountered while updating options: Wrong value for fup_default_caption.” I assumed it was related to the Caption option but no matter which choice I selected I got the error message. The plug-in seems to work great anyway. Just wanted you to know.

    Hello,
    Can you put something to send all images to the editor after uploading them? Because it take a long time to put every picture because of loading things that wordpress 2.5 shows. Thanks

  485. 485 On 4月 15th, 2008, Gustavo said:

    Flexible upload would be perfect for WP 2.5 if it maintained WP 2.5 capacity to select many files to upload at once and put back the way to insert then to the post as it was before.

    I really sux to have to open that lightbox everytime I have to insert one image

    The error occurs similarly though the operation verification of the up-grade doing was done to 1.13.

    Though it is a thing that I examined,
    error seems to occur in the title including 2 byte character.

    Is this a problem that can be dealt on the Flexible Upload side?

    Felipe,

    You could take a look at POEdit, it’s a multi-platform PO editor. Otherwise, just copy flexible-upload.pot to it_IT.po and pt_PT.po, respectively, and edit them with the text editor of your choice. Then, I’ll generate the .mo files and include them in the plugin.

    Thanks in advance,
