Webapps for Project Management

posted in Software |

Recently, I tried two web applications which I’d like to briefly review.

Mindomo logoThe first one is Mindomo http://mindomo.com/ A very neat tool, which allows you to write mind maps. Try to dump the content of your brain in a Word document, it doesn’t work ;) Try to write a mind map, there’s still a gap with what you think, but it is closer to what you (think you) are thinking… Mindomo is an excellent example of a RIA, with an easy to use interface and some pretty features (like map sharing). And it’s free….. at least for up to 7 maps (that’s obviously a big limitation…)

Teamwork Project logoAbout the other webapp I’d like to present, I’m a little less enthousiast. I am talking about teamwork project http://twproject.com/. This one has a different purpose, it is an integrated tool suite for project management. There is a downloadable version, which I didn’t try, so I am only talking about the online version. First the pros: the tools has plenty of features, including task scheduling, team communication, issue management, project overview, etc. And they say it integrates with SCRUM (to create project and sprint backlogs), but the wizard does not seem to be available in the online version (?). However, the main problem I see with this tool: it’s too slow!! (again, I’m speaking of the online version). It is not responsive (no Ajax out there? too many page refresh) and the number of clicks needed to perform simple things (e.g. add a task) is too high. Otherwise, I’d really have loved this tool…

Do you know any online project management tool you would recommend?

    Hi,
I’m one of the developers of Teamwork. We are aware that the online version is a bit slow; in fact Teamwork was built for using it on intranets, and it is not optimized for online usage; usually people install it on their intra, and occasionally use it remotely. On the other side, it is really rich of features, and we use Ajax too where we can, like for the todo webpart, computing the working days lengths, drawing Gantts … . The locally installed version also allows you to play with ICal/Outlook integration, LDAP, plugs on your database, cutomize labels, add forms,… . It comes provided with a multi-platform installer, so it should be quite easy to test.
Thanks anyway for picking us up, cheers

    Hi Pietro,

    Thank you for reacting!

I understand what you’re saying. In fact, I think online apps will be more and more important. See the google software suite. Apart from some bits (google earth or the google toolbar), you don’t install them on your computer, and yet, you can edit documents, spreadsheets, handle your calendar online. That’s why I think the online version of Teamwork Project is important, and I am looking forward to see (and use) a faster version!

I found your post very interesting and I strongly recommend ProjectOffice.net. It is an online project management tool that provides all-in-one functionality: managing projects and tasks, time management, issue tracking system and increased team collaboration through wikis.
ProjectOffice.net is a web-based solution that offers basic project management functionality and enhanced collaboration for its users and their teams.
It is completely free of charge and can be used after the one-step registration has been completed. With ProjectOffice.net, individuals and teams can create projects and tasks, can assign tasks to project members, can track time, expenses and issues and can use wikis to boost collaboration and knowledge sharing.
